Nonetheless, Spotify is still a great running music app. It offers a vast selection of playlists to listen to while you're jogging. Find them in the Workout playlist category. To access this, open the app on your phone and go to Search > Workout.


Importantly for some people, Spring Running Music is an app that plays music to your running pace. It will automatically detect your running rhythm and play music that has a corresponding BPM. In total, it offers more than 100 different playlists packed with the best running music to listen to.


If you're not bothered about using an app that plays music to your running pace, Spotify is the obvious answer---especially as you might already subscribe to it. For people who want a BPM music app, we recommend RockMyRun.


The basic free version serves as a great running tracking app. Offering cool features like live tracking, goal setting and voice feedback. As for music you can select a playlist from iTunes and Powersong, an integrated music player.


Aaptiv specializes in audio-based workouts led by trainers, meaning you don't have to keep your eyes or fingers on a screen to exercise. A trainer tells you what to do, with music in the background. The app suggests workouts that will suit you based on information you provide, such as what type of exercise you like (stretching, strength training, yoga, indoor cycling, outdoor running, stair climber, and others) and what styles of music you prefer. As of this writing, there's a seven-day free trial via the web app, though it requires a credit card to access.


The Johnson & Johnson Official 7 Minute Workout App is a circuit training workout app that lets you squeeze some exercise into your day at an intensity level that's right for you. All you need is a chair and about seven minutes. A medium-intensity workout includes jumping jacks, wall chair sits, high-knee running in place, triceps dips on a chair, and a few other moves. The app has other options beyond the classic seven-minute routine, such as First Timer, Intermediate 16 Minute, and Core Workout. You can also create custom workouts by stitching together exercises that are right for you. The interface is surprisingly attractive and intuitive. Audio and visual cues tell you when to start and stop each exercise in the routine, and a video demonstration appears in the middle to guide you. Swipe the screen one direction, and you can pull in music from your phone. Swipe the other direction, and you see a running timer. The Johnson & Johnson Official 7 Minute Workout app is one of the best fitness apps because it balances simplicity with adequate information, and it's suitable for nearly anyone at any ability level.


If you like live exercise classes but can't get to them or find them too pricey, try Openfit. You log into your Openfit account and sign up for live classes that you stream when it's time to work out. You can enroll in a class ahead of time to get it on your calendar, or if you can't make it, choose any video workout from a previously recorded class on your own schedule. Sort the classes by style to find ones you like, including barre, circuit training, kickboxing, pilates, strength training, running, stretching, and yoga. It's your choice whether you decide to enable your camera so the trainer can see you and give you feedback. Only the trainer can see you, not other people who have joined the class. Openfit also has recipes and nutrition information. The site also sells supplements. The cost of an annual subscription increased in 2021, but it's still competitively priced for what you get.


RockMyRun is a music app for workouts, including running, and it's designed to keep you moving. You can choose a playlist based on the type of music you like, or you can have the music in the app match your rhythm. If you work out while wearing a heart rate monitor or let your phone feel your footfalls while you run, the app can match your tempo. There's also a way to manually adjust the tempo. With a wide variety of genres, RockMyRun has plenty of music to keep you moving. A two-week free trial requires a credit or debit card.


You can do one, two or three circuits. You can watch the clock, the trainer, or listen to and control music during your workout. You can even swap out workouts to keep things interesting. Of course, you can also stick with the original 7 Minute Workout.


In a recent update, Peloton has also added outdoor running classes to the app, so if you're a runner who loves to take your training outside, you can follow an audio session from one of your favorite trainers. It's all of the same motivational chat and music, but without the Tread.

PaceDJ: This app scans your music library to find the BPM of songs to create tempo-specific playlists. You can also choose from a number of premade playlists or let the app identify your running/walking pace and play songs that match.


The ANC here is nothing special, but the Ambient Aware feature is great, letting you hear enough of your surroundings to have a conversation with another person while music is still playing at about 50% volume. That's a great thing to have, especially when you're running outdoors.


What's more, away from music we're big fans of the Forerunner 255 as a running watch. It offers Garmin's latest multi-band mode to improve outdoor tracking, a new race widget, and morning report features. We also found the optical heart rate monitor performed well even at high intensity.


The Forerunner 955 is a triathlon watch, so it's big on swimming, cycling and running. It comes with big battery life, though streaming music will inevitably eat into that time you have to track, so that's something to keep in mind.
